Gas Meter Safety

Our employees must be able to access your natural gas meter at all times for reading, maintenance, testing or replacement. There is no maintenance that you need to do to your meter, but there are some safety tips you can follow to avoid damage.

Meter Safety Tips:

  • For our employees’ safety, please secure your pets away from meters, and NEVER tie a pet to a meter.
  • Do not stack anything on, attach anything to, or cover a meter as this could damage the meter or piping.
  • Avoid planting trees, shrubs or bushes within three feet of your gas meter. As the bush or tree grows, the roots can damage your piping or meter. See more information about the tolerance zone here.
  • Remove any snow or ice from the natural gas meter carefully with a broom or brush, but never kick or try to chip with a hard object.

To report a natural gas odor or emergency, leave the area immediately and then call 911 and 800-959-5325.
