Digging without knowing what’s below can damage underground utilities, leading to outages, costly repairs or injury. From planting a garden to installing a deck, all digging projects require contacting 811 at least 48 hours, excluding weekends and holidays, before digging starts. It’s free to do and helps protect yourself and your community!
After all underground facilities are marked, remember to practice safe digging techniques in the tolerance zone, a minimum of 18 inches plus half the diameter of the pipe from either side of the outer edge of the underground facility, by using only hand tools or soft digging.
