It's crowded under your yard, and Texas Gas Service wants you to tackle those late summer outdoor projects confidently. Understanding what to do before you dig is one of the most important things you can do.

Already know what to do before digging? Do you understand what the color flags or paint in your yard mean?

If so, you can put that safety knowledge to good use this August with Texas Gas Service's 11 Days of Giveaways on Facebook.

What’s in it for me?

Beginning Aug. 1 and running through 811 Day on Aug. 11, Texas Gas Service will ask various questions related to safe digging. If you answer correctly, you'll be added to a daily drawing for gift cards to Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's, Target, Ace Hardware, Academy and more! All you need to do is follow us on Facebook and answer the question correctly in the comments.

What is 811 Day?

811 is the national call-before-you-dig number for professional excavators and homeowners created to help prevent damage to underground utilities. National 811 Day, which falls each year on Aug. 11, is an annual reminder to contact 811 at least 48 hours, Monday through Friday, except holidays, before beginning any digging project.

It only takes one careless swing of a shovel to damage a buried pipeline, which could result in service disruptions, injury and more. Avoiding that mistake is easy though! All you've got to do is contact 811 and someone will mark all underground utility lines. That way, you know what's below!

It's free, it's the law and all it takes is a little planning ahead. It's just as easy as answering our daily quiz in the 11 Days of Giveaways on Facebook.

If you want to brush up on your safe digging knowledge so you can ace each question, go to BeADigHeroTexas.com. And be sure to follow us on Facebook and participate in our 11 Days of Giveaways.
